Mapping a Term
Within Symedical, source and target terms are mapped based on an analysis process that utilizes a set of algorithms to associate equivalent terms and determine whether to map the identified terms or return them as candidates. Waypoint displays the mappings made in Symedical and provides tools that enable term review and manual mapping within Map Manager.
Follow these steps to maintain mappings. The example below illustrates the mapping of two terms.
-
With your desired map open in Map Manager, search for and highlight the source terms you wish to map.
-
If minimized, move the split bar to review or search for candidate mappings in the Candidates pane. Click
on the Map Manager toolbar to orient the split bar to the right-hand side or the bottom of the window. -
In the Candidates pane, click
to update candidates for the selected source term. -
In the Candidates tab, view any candidates that were returned. If no candidates are returned for a selected source term, the Browse tab opens by default and auto searches for candidates based on the first word of the source term.
-
For help in making a mapping decision, use one of the following review tools:
-
Source and Target Term Comparison — Review how source and target term information, such as source codes, characteristic values, or algorithm match values, match up. To access, select a source term, select a target term, and then double-click on one of the selected terms to open Term Comparison.
-
Source Term Detail — Review source term information, such as parse history, map analysis returns, attributes, and a list of maps that the term appears in as a source or target term. To access, select a source term and then click
to open Term Details. -
Target Term Detail — Review target term information, such as parse history, map analysis returns, attributes, and a list of maps that the term appears in as a source or target term. To access, select a target term, click Term, and then click View Target Term Detail.
See the Term Comparison and Term Details topics for field details.
Term Comparison shows that domain characteristics match up for all but the dose form.

Once you have your desired target term in focus within the Candidates or Browse tab, ensure your source terms are selected, and then click
to map the target term. The green option (
) indicates that the source and target terms are mapped. -
To remove a target term associated to the source term, select the mapped source term and then click
. The clear option (
) next to the target term indicates that the target term is no longer mapped. The yellow option (
) located next to the source term indicates that the source term has a candidate. -
To freetext a term and give it an unmappable status, select a source term and then click
. Set this value when you wish to exclude the term from map analysis. The blue option (
) located next to the source term in the grid indicates the freetext term status.
